Gavin’s shift at the burning pit was over. He returned to his empty house. He opened his front door and walked inside, tossing his backpack on the floor next to the coatrack. He felt a cool breeze coming through the broken front windows of his home. Most of the windows of his home were broken. His home was a mess, destroyed by the riots and looting that happened when the pandemic started picking up steam and killed people by the millions. Gavin never bothered to clean it up. Living in a well-kept home didn’t matter to him anymore.

Gavin’s wife and son had died of the sickness before the looting. Gavin had been alone in his home when the mass of people had come. They came with bats and knives. They came with shovels and picks. The rioting wasn’t about stealing, raping or any other vile human endeavor that takes over in a time of chaos. It was about destruction. It was about humanity’s rage at being destroyed. If the sickness was going to be the end of everyone, they would leave nothing in their wake.
